Cookie Chaos
Recognised for its social and environmental impact, Ben & Jerry’s has always emphasised maintaining a conscious production process, respecting the environment and the ethical values established by the brand’s founders. From the very beginning, this was one of the goals the company worked hard to preserve, starting in Vermont, where it still sources the majority of its dairy suppliers today.
However, not everything remained the same after Ben & Jerry’s was sold to the multinational Unilever, especially considering the brand’s growing production demands.
With particular attention to the brand’s environmental impact and ecological footprint, maintaining a conscious and responsible production was a value Ben & Jerry’s claimed to uphold since day one. Therefore, the news that Ben & Jerry’s — one of the largest dairy buyers in Vermont — was responsible for the deterioration of the region’s water and soil quality did not reflect the brand’s supposedly conscious stance.
Owning the majority of the dairy farms in Vermont, with the intention of monitoring and guaranteeing its production, resulted in the pollution of 40% to 79% of the waters surrounding these farms, leading to the closure of multiple recreational and swimming areas.
Thus, the flavour Cookie Chaos emerges from this environmental and irresponsible crisis caused by the brand and the chaos generated in its attempt to keep up with rising demand.
